Mert Diner (1976, İskenderun), graduated from Uludağ University’s Mechanical Engineering Department in 1999. Diner studied with painter Irfan Önürmen between 2005-2007. Receiving a scholarship in 2007, he moved to New York, studying painting at the NYSS (New York Studio School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture until 2009. He lives and works in Istanbul.
In his works, we can see the artist’s interest on the concepts of negative space, flatness, color field divisions, accidents and how accidents become the part of the work; self evolution, mark making, consciousness / unconsciousness and the plastic issues in the various series created over the years. Some of the main series he produced are “A Glimpse of the Other Side”, “When You Cover It”, “Obscure”, “Other Side”, “Lovely Fucking Greys”. These series deal with the relation between the visible and the non-visible and space behind the visible in different ways and with different starting points..
