The ultimate collection enchanted by Araki Decades of visuals are reduced to 512 pages in this ultimate retrospective collection of Nobuyoshi Araki's work, selected by the artist himself. Originally released as a Limited Edition and now released in a new format to celebrate TASCHEN's 40th anniversary, the curator delves into Araki's best-known images: Tokyo street scenes; faces and food; colorful, sensual flowers; female genitalia; and the Japanese art of kinbaku or bondage. While the girls are tied but defiant and glowing petals take on obscene shapes, Araki constantly plays with patterns of submission and liberation, death and desire, and the shift between serene image and shock. Describing captivity photographs as a “collaboration between the subject and the photographer”, Araki aims to approach female subjects through photography, emphasizing the role of verbal conversation between herself and the model. In her hometown of Japan, she gained cult status for many women who felt free to photograph the expression of their desires. Artist Nobuyoshi Araki was born in Tokyo in 1940. Given a camera at the age of 12 by his father, Araki has been taking pictures ever since. He studied photography and film at Chiba University and started commercial photography shortly after graduating. In 1970 he created the famous Xeroxed Photo Albums, which he produced in limited numbers and sent to friends, art critics, and randomly selected contacts from the phone book. Over the years, bold, shameless photos of his private life have been the subject of great controversy and censorship (especially in Japan), a fact that did not offend or diminish the artist's influence. Araki has published more than 400 books on his works to date. Araki. 40th Anniversary Edition Nobuyoshi Araki Hardcover, 15.6 x 21.7 cm, 1.47 kg, 512 pages
