From the “Jerry built” Series In the artist's work on canvas, which carries an intense expression using various painting techniques, we observe the figure as imprisoned inside a wall with newspapers, posters, and slogans reflecting the daily headlines. Studying the relationship between a "thing" and its essence, what we see, what an image looks like seems to be a fundamental issue. In other words, the sense of identification and balance that can be found in the work reveals how contrived an image that appears to be a happy utopian at first sight is. In this way, it reveals how utopia and dystopia can coexist. It deals with the ways the effect of beauty and the need for acceptance have on us, and how the essence is consumed. The reality behind what appears on the streets of the city is associated with issues that are indirectly prevented from thinking of. The idea is that symbolic creation could overthrow institutional control. It is observed that the "I" trying to be "itself" as the object of an artificial life has become an object of consumption. The artist asks how the life that we should be the subject of is consumed to be accepted in society and the self-destruction that will arise as a result of this distancing us from ourselves. This artwork is only available at shopi go ART. The Certificate of Authenticity containing the name, date, technique, size and edition information of the work will be signed by the artist and delivered to you. This artwork will be prepared upon your purchase; it will be delivered within 5-10 working days. You can contact us for framing options, after the placement of the order.
BIOGRAPHY

Oğulcan Sürmeli (Istanbul, 1995) used painting to make sense of the world from a very young age. Diagnosed with ADHD, he had professional help for some time. However, it turned out that the artist simply did not fit into the stereotypes.
In his high school years, he started researching the relationship between brain and behavior. In the following years, he completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Faculty of Fine Arts at Işık University. After graduating, his article about art was featured in Art Unlimited. He took part in many group exhibitions and projects. In his works, the artist blended art and psychology, furthermore he worked with clinical psychologists. He mastered any method or discipline that works to transfer his ideas best. The artist currently carries on his works on plastic arts in Istanbul.
Oğulcan Sürmeli’s works are tools to express spirituality. He heads towards the discipline that transfers his ideas about the spiritual and the usual the best. After determining the discipline he strengthens the basis for the technics he will be using. Eventually, he metaphorizes cultural memory and values of the geography he lives in and creates artistic works out of it. In his works, he analyzes the relationship of “a thing” and its “essence” thoroughly. He focuses on the “meaning”. An utopic state of an object alters when it loses its meaning during the production phase, proving the viewer that the idea of utopia and dystopia are not quite different from one another.
The artist’s plastic language can be linked to the matters lying beneath the streets of the city that are -unofficially- forbidden to think. The idea here is that a symbolic creation can actually destroy institutional control mechanism.
