Pera Palace became a symbol of western orientalism and Ottoman westernization in 1895 when it first opened, and has changed with its surroundings within 125 years. “Decadence” exhibition aimed to establish parallelism between the two periods in which the face of the country returns to the west and east with a sharp turn. The participating artists present topics on today’s collapse, starting with references from cult guests (Knut Hamsun, Ernest Hemingway, Agatha Christie, Alfred Hitchcock, Pierre Loti, Mata Hari, Misbah Muhayyeş, Zsa Zsa Gabor) of the hotel or from the personal history of the hotel. Ünal Bostancı, with his installation named “Sorrow”, pairs a golden PVC cat skeleton with a sound installation and pays his tribute to Pera Palace Hotel’s owner Misbah Muhayyeş. Muhayyeş had seen the demise of probably the two most important beings in his life at the same time; his business was sinking and his cat “Bon” had died. “Bon” is an adjective meaning good, beautiful in French, and his death was the death of all “beauty.” While all evidence pointed to suicide, the Turkish press published the news with the subhead: “The millionaire overcome with sorrow after his cat’s death drank until the morning and fell on the ground, injuring his head. In the morgue report his cause of death was revealed as heart failure.” What was more important anyways was the death of “Bon.” This artwork is only available at shopi go ART. The Certificate of Authenticity containing the name, date, technique, size and edition information of the work will be signed by the artist and delivered to you. This artwork will be delivered within 2-5 working days.
