BIOGRAPHY

BURCU PERÇİN (b. 1979, Ankara), the artist graduated from the Mimar Sinan University Fine Arts Faculty Painting Department in 2002. In her visual narratives, Burcu Perçin often displays a desolate nature that has been consumed and changed by human beings, and/or places of production that has become obsolete. The depictions range from abandoned factory structures to marble quarries, which give a feeling of an ending with a deep simplicity each time. Visualizing nature’s silent cry through her distinctive aesthetic language in her works, Perçin emphasizes that what is lost is not only the nature itself but humanity’s future as well, and underlines the extent of humanity’s problematic relationship with nature. The artist sheds light on themes such as unemployment and poverty as result of globalization within the industrial order as well as on more personal moments such as the feeling of isolation and confinement, while the main themes of her depictions also include the damages of relationships based on self-interest to nature and the artificial nature landscapes created by human beings.
Besides painting, the artist also expresses herself through mediums of sculpture and photography. Her photo-collages in which she treats photographs with oil paint and the reliefs she creates with natural stones have strong ties with her paintings. In her works, in which the visual perception varies according to the point of view, and are perceived as abstract forms at close range, while the parts appear as a whole when looked from afar; the artist refers to thought practices of both abstract and realist painting. Maintaining the abstract language of her oil paintings on canvas and the compositions she constructs on a surface by cutting natural stones and marbles, Perçin offers a new perspective to the idea of nature and how we relate to it, with these works.
