Publication date: 15 February 2012 Hard cover 704 pages Language: English Product dimensions: 16.2 x 33.7 x 36.8 cm About: Black & White is the definitive collection of Bruce Davidsons black and white photography, spanning a period of 40 years. This collectable five-volume set comprises re-prints of classic books of Davidsons poignant and purposeful imagery, some of them newly edited and expanded. The seminal bodies of work are Circus (1958), an intimate portrait of a dwarf clown; Brooklyn Gang (1959), depicting a group of troubled youths; Time of Change (1961-1965), a civil rights documentation in America; East 100th Street (1966-1968), showing life on one block in Spanish Harlem; and Central Park (1992-1995), exploring layers of life in New Yorks famous urban oasis. Black & White is a tribute to Davidsons unique photographic achievement, and a powerful document of social change.
Steidl, the publishing house founded by Gerhard Steidl and still manages himself, is now one of the largest in the world. Gerhard Steidl, who started working as a designer and publisher in 1967 at the age of 17, met Andy Warhol at his exhibition in Cologne. Steidl, fascinated by the intensity and saturation of colors in Warhol's works, received information about the artist's screen printing technique. Steidl, who started making posters for art galleries, did not take long to include important artists such as Joseph Beuys and Klaus Staeck among his customers. Within a few years he realized that the printing business was not a mechanical process for him, but a passion. Steidl, which controls all processes such as proofreading, design, typography, screening, marketing, distribution, public relations and printing, is just one of the few publishing houses independently operated by its founder.
