BERNA GÜLBEY
3DBerna Gülbey (1982, Malatya) after graduating from Avni Akyol Fine Arts High School in 2003, she graduated from Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Painting in 2009. The artist continues her work in Istanbul and Bodrum.
In her works, the artist questions the perspective that patriarchal oppressive visuality reduces the female body to a mere sexual object. Gülbey, who describes this phenomenon, which is also called "male gaze" in art history, in her own fairytale-like language, presents the "opposition stance" of women to the audience. Women who question the balance of power and physical pleasure are depicted in dreamed utopian spaces, making references to art history as well as cultural judgments. Berna Gülbey's women are brave, self-confident and strong women who display their sexuality without fear of their body and who proudly criticize cultural norms.
