HİLMİ CAN ÖZDEMİR

2D

After graduating from Eskisehir Ataturk Fine Arts High School, Hilmi Can Özdemir (Eskişehir, 1995) attended the Department of Painting of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Anadolu University to complete his Bachelor’s Degree. During his university years, he participated in multiple group exhibitions and workshops. He is currently continuing his training at the Institute of Fine Arts at the Anadolu University while working on projects in his studio.
The artist’s works are based on anonymous photos. He compiles postcards, historical images, family and city archives and works on them. Through his interpretations, he challenges the thin line between reality and distorted reality and manages to blur the boundary between photography and painting.
Özdemir carefully picks compositions that seemingly have ordinary nature and reconstructs them with a specific notion which creates a new and unqiue perspective. With this in mind, he encodes cultural and social messages to his works in a symbolic way that can be undecoded right away. Each viewer decodes the messages according to his or her experiences, social background and accustomed cultural codes.

2018, Kiremit Art Initiative, group exhibition, Galeri Soyut, Ankara, Turkey
2016, International Eskisehir Terra Cotta Symposium, Üretim Bandı, group exhibition, Turkey
2015, Small Works, group exhibition, Galeri Soyut, Ankara, Turkey
