BIOGRAPHY

Candan İşcan (Ankara, 1987) completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design in Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture at Bilkent University. She spent a year as an exchange student at School of Art and Design of The University of Michigan where she also completed her Master’s Degree in the following years.
After moving to Istanbul in 2013, the artist worked as an art director at NTV Tarih ve #tarih magazines. In 2015, she attended Mamut Art Project, a milestone for her professional career as an artist. In the following years, İşcan attended several group exhibitions in multiple galleries with her large scale pencil drawings. Her first solo exhibition, Flowers of the Night, was held in 2019.
Currently, İşcan continues her art studies at her studio in Kızıltoprak. She also works as a freelance graphic designer and illustrator.
There is an unexpected feeling of astonishment, when we try to perceive the seemingly familiar world. Yet, behind what we already know and established, there is a mysterious other side of it. The nature is so vast that even though it stands right before our eyes, we cannot figure out its capacity with our minds. To connect with it, we need something as primitive and wild as nature itself, something neglected in the hustle and bustle of everyday life; something tamed by the skin that covers it; our flesh. Even the pieces one comes across in human anatomy atlases and anatomical models constitute a part of this indescribably peculiar, bountiful, lively and overflowing side of nature.
In artist’s works the mystery of the “untamed” spirit that faded away when people moved to the cities unravels. The boundaries between nature and body disappear. For a moment, branches feed the heart like veins, while veins burst into buds; a rock’s heart starts to beat and bones blossom. Her works focuses on images of nature and body in an analytical point of view. Interpreting them with an artistic approach, she creates a new perspective.
Through the images of body(inner world), she disrupts the representations of nature(outer world); she mixes, replaces them and plays with these images. She separates them from their rational and meaningful nature and instead builds a new, strange and unfamiliar one around them.
