SeptemberL is not just a calendar beginning for Istanbul; it is the heart of culture and art that is accelerating again. In this issue, we are following three main axes that determine the rhythm of the city: The Gaza Biennale – Istanbul Pavilion to be opened at the Depot, the 18th Istanbul Biennial spanning three years, and Contemporary Istanbul celebrating its 20th yearL. Each touches on the needs for social memory, ethical responsibility, and resilience beyond the exhibitions.

The Istanbul Pavilion of the Gaza Biennale, With a Cloud in My Hand, explores ways of creating and resisting in the face of war and destruction with contributions from artists like Alfredo Jaar and Walid Raad. The Istanbul Biennial, with its theme “Three-Legged Cat,” breaks established molds with its structure extending from 2025 to 2027; it creates a space for thinking and discussion spread over time. Contemporary Istanbul, on the other hand, brings together works ranging from Alexander Calder to Julie Mehretu in its 20th edition at Tersane Istanbul, merging both the past and the present in the same memory.

In this issue, we also include the idea of “ZERO” designed in collaboration between humans and artificial intelligence. ZERO is envisioned as a model that prioritizes truth, can track its own consistency, and can make contradictions visible. This construct, which can maintain its integrity even under pressure, reminds us of the current role of art: making the unseen visible, making questioning possible, and serving as a compass in moments of crisis.

The excitement of the new season is hidden right here. Biennials, fairs, and pavilions call not only for looking but for seeing; not only for watching but for participating. Art will be the most powerful language that keeps the pulse of the city this autumn, embodying fragility and resilience at the same time.
