MELIKE
2DMelike (1980, Samsun) started her art education in 1994 at the Painting Department of Izmir Anatolian Fine Arts High School. While studying at Marmara University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Painting, between 1998 and 2003, she also worked on the Performative Acting and Staging Method developed by Şahika Tekand at Studio Players, and took part in the cast of the team in the following years. She gained different experiences in workshops ranging from plastic arts to performative arts at home and abroad. In 2003, he started his master's degree at Yıldız Technical University, Faculty of Art and Design, Department of Art, and completed it with the thesis titled "Choreographic Object in the Works of Robert Rauschenberg, William Forsythe, Jérôme Bel in the Context of Interdisciplinary Art". Since 2019, she has been working in the fields of photography, video-audio, as well as painting.
ARTIST STATEMENT
Melike produces interdisciplinary works including painting, photography, video-audio and animation. Art practice is based on form research of body-centered gesture, which takes place in the present, with different techniques and disciplines. The process in which the works emerge includes physical and mental, essentially experimental research in which the ethical approach speaks with the grammar of the painting discipline. By destroying time, the mind and body enter into relationship with the material - in the sense of a mental process - and a search for a playful form takes place with the possibilities and impossibilities offered by the technique. Problems that push the boundaries of pictorial style, such as the interruption of movement due to performance in painting, becoming ordinary, or just pointing to a random stain bearing the trace of movement, occur in photography and other disciplines, again based on performance, in the direction of pushing the boundaries of photography or the style used. Considering that the artist's own body is the center of the works, the resulting forms point to the issues of self/body as agent, woman, performer and object.
