BIOGRAPHY

Başak Cansu Güvenkaya (Istanbul, 1991), completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Sculpture with a first-class degree at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2016 and achieved Sakip Sabanci Art Award. During her education, the artist attended Weissensee Kunsthochschule in Berlin as an exchange student in 2013.

Güvenkaya, later on completed her Master’s Degree in Sculpture at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2019. Her first solo exhibition was held at IMOGA, Istanbul Museum of Graphic Arts in 2020. Her works were exhibited in Australia, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, Italy as well as Turkey. Currently, the artist continues creating artworks at her studio in London.

Başak Cansu Güvenkaya is looking for places where she can develop a sense of belonging. With this in mind, she travels and explores a lot. Through her travels, the artist faced her deep fear of future which led to a self-doubt, questioning her aspiration to exist and express herself as an artist. As a way out, she created a world of her own, enriched by her touch.

By stating, the modern people of our age becoming more and more individualistic in the name of independence, the artist emphasizes the feeling of isolation, the inevitable outcome of individualization in her works. Güvenkaya’s sculptures and paintings suggest a playful and colorful way to oppose this condition.

Her sculptures and paintings work like a charm. They clear a path for reinterpreting the idea of guardianship, the original intent of sculptures and paintings in many cultures. Her artworks embody an expression and a protection against evils of the world, creating a space where evil and fear do not exist; it is an imaginary world of its own.
