BIOGRAPHY
Beril Gür (İzmir, 1989) completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Urban Planning and Engineering at Istanbul Technical University. At the same university, she completed Master’s Degree in Architecture. Her thesis focused on representation of Istanbul through photography. Her works have been shown in various exhibitions in Berlin, Nottingham, Paris, Amsterdam and Eindhoven apart from Istanbul and Ankara.
Having a background in architecture and urban planning, the artist explores the new ways of looking at the city in different scales. Representation of space in visual narratives is a focus point for her. Directing her interest towards the relationship of people and the built environment, Gür developed an approach which can be defined as the search of the ‘infra-ordinary’.* Mostly preferring lens-based media, the artist studies the relationships of time, architecture and memory in her productions. In an iterative pattern, looking at “what happens when nothing happens” is the focus of her works in this place-oriented approach.
Currently, Beril Gür is lecturing on representation of space through visual narratives in Istanbul Bilgi University and MEF University.
With these lectures, she aims to provide a critical understanding about the perception of space in visual arts. Working with architecture students on the sensory perception of space and mentoring them on their personal projects provide artist new with perspectives.
* a term coined by George Perec.
