BIOGRAPHY
Born in Istanbul in 1987, Mert Çağıl Türkay completed his undergraduate, graduate and art proficiency education at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Photography. He has taken part in exhibitions and workshops on many national and international platforms such as "International Print Triennial / Interfaces", "Realm- Eyes On / Monat der fotografie Wien", "Mamut Art Project", "TÜYAP Art Fair", "Aspects of Balkan Photography". He produces photography, alternative photo printing techniques, installation and video projects. He uses alternative photographic printing techniques that can convey contemporary and avant-garde images that emerge emotionally and symbolically through the manipulation of tonality, texture, materials and details. In his works, the politics of difference and emphasis on gender, the body-power relationship and the use of the body for protest purposes are mostly seen.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The artist, who produces photography, alternative photo printing techniques, installation and video projects, frequently uses alternative photo printing techniques to create contemporary and avant-garde images that can convey visual information emotionally and symbolically through the manipulation of tonality, texture, material and detail. The main subjects of the photo and video installations are mostly the politics of difference, the concept of the other, the emphasis on homoeroticism and gender, the body-power relationship and the use of the body for protest purposes. The body became the most important object of his work because it was a material with a high expressive power that could be manipulated from various perspectives at will, or even completely destroyed and recreated in the process. He emphasizes the body-gender duality and gender construction in his works, in which he examines the varying and ongoing effects of the control of the masculine structure on both the artist and his works, and the questioning methods of the mechanisms created against these effects.
