BIOGRAPHY

Ali Kanal (İzmir, 1988) completed his undergraduate education at Dokuz Eylül University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Sculpture in 2015. He started his ongoing master's degree in 2017 at Dokuz Eylül University, Fine Arts Institute, Department of Sculpture.

The artist, who lives in Izmir and continues his work in his workshop there, is also a member of the Darağaç collective, which has been one of the city's contemporary art actors since 2016 and takes its name from the neighborhood where it is located.

ARTIST STATEMENT

In his productions, Ali Kanal uses objects he encounters in an empty building or a deserted street in his daily life. The two most important parts of the artist's production process are this search and the intermediate phase. The artist gets lost in every search, and when he finds it, he feels that he exists. These objects he found and used in his works also symbolize a persistent resistance to repeating the same composition.

The artist strives to create a new form of life from waste, loss and abandonment. The nature of the object and the simple structure of the compositions give the artist's works a primitive form. The artist considers his works as symbols that reflect the post-apocalyptic world.
