The artist, who was synonymous with the New York of the 1980s, first appeared in the late 1970s under the label Samo, erupting destructive interpretations and fragmented poems on the walls of the city. It has emerged as part of the developing underground scene of visual arts and graffiti, hip hop, post-punk and DIY film production, which meets in an developing art world.
