It all started in 1978 when Paul Van Doren wanted to create a model similar to the iconic #36, known today as the Vans Old Skool. His goal was to design a functional shoe that would suit all skateboarders and provide a fresh perspective. He succeeded and introduced a new model, the #38, known as the Vans Sk8-Hi, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year.
